It's for e39, but almost every BMW is similar. The e-39 has the pull-up latch on the left of the grille, the e-53 on the right (as you look at the front of the car). Here is a linky.

P.S.: I just replaced the cable a few days ago. Take a look at this post, there are some pics and it might give you clues how to actuate the lever.
