First of all - welcome to xOutpost - the best BMW forum outthere!!!

like you said, the new part number matches to your car as a newer part... and, it also cross references to the X3, while the older part is not cross referencing to the X3, maybe because the X3 was not in production at the time... the function of the DSP is reported through the system via a broadcast on the iBus, and it seems that the telegram from the new amp is not recognized by rest of the car. in absense of a cut/chaffed/nicked iBus wire, it seems that you are right, you need to tell the amp in what language to talk to the car, in your case, in the Z-speak instead of the X-speak... i just made those words up, but you get the idea...

what coding tools do you have? if any...
