As for the tools, I think I never found exactly what I needed. The one I was talking about was most definitely third party, and seemed somewhat limited to what I described above, and resetting certain error codes and such. I've been looking for what would be the good stuff, but never found a good source or guide or such that actually worked.

If they have a GT1 or whatever the latest bmw tool is called (or equivalent), they should be able to do it.
You need to tell the amp it is in a Z4, not an X3. Should do the trick.
