The motor assy is held to the hatch by plastic tabs. They break off just from age. Your description is exactly what it's like when they break.

Pop off the plastic cover inside the hatch and see. It's very simple mounting.

You can search for my fix, but that's not really diy; for most folks, it's a new assy for around $200.
