Just out of curiosity, with all of the places that you could take a day trip to from Manhattan, what's the draw of Buffalo/Niagara falls area?

The trip kind of happened because last year we were taking my kids (from my first marriage) to the South of France. Jon broke his leg about 2 weeks before we were due to go and as we were driving 900 miles (in the X5) I really couldn't see any way he could either make it or enjoy his holiday once down there.
The decision was made to leave him behind with his Mum - the most difficult decision I have ever made......
To make it up to him I presented him with tickets to NY. As Niagara was close I thought he'd like that as well. I've only been to Niagara once and it is impressive to say the least!
We are staying in the Ramada Plaza & Inn - New Yorker Hotel (hope I haven't made a mistake here!) and then in the Marriott Niagara Fallsview on the CA side.
I plan to fly to Buffalo and then take a cab to the hotel. Staying overnight and back to NY for Saturday, going to see a show in the evening or something similar and flying home Sunday evening for Monday morning.
He's pretty excited about the trip and I think we'll have some fun together.
Going to show him all the sites, helicopter over NY, all the stuff. However any suggestions as a 'must do' would be great.
