It seemed like time for an refresh to our ongoing cycling thread. Let's hear how everyone's riding is going this summer.
Here's my update.
Still riding the Cervelo R5. Liking the Campy Super Record 11. Upgraded the stock wheels to Zipp Firecrest 303 Carbon Clinchers, with 25c Continental 4000s tires (to match the wider aero rim). They roll very quickly, top speed is up measurably. Not bad in crosswinds at all. Braking isn't as good as with aluminum rims, even with Zipp pads.
We accumulated 2500 km of training this summer, with my wife on her R3. We were faster than last year, so our training is outpacing our aging, which is good news. We went to France two weeks ago, and did a week of supported touring around Provence with Trek Travel, riding rental Domane 5.9s with Ultegra DI2. The headtubes were a bit too high for us; the frames were otherwise good, and DI2 was great, I'm a convert. Trip support was excellent. Each day had climbing (hilltop towns, the Gorges de la Nesque, etc) The trip highlight was climbing Mont Ventoux on day 4, up the front (Bedoin ascent) and down to Malaucene. Quite a bit (meaning a lot) slower than Chris Froome did it in July. Photos attached. Epic climb, and we got the jerseys. We rode to Bedoin from Mazan, then a 22 km climb that averaged 7.5%, with four or five kilometers averaging 10%. Peak grade was 12%. It never let up for the full climb. You break out of the treeline onto a limestone moonscape at the 16 km mark or so, and you can see the weather station at the summit, but that is when it gets steep again. And hot. But we are very glad we did it.
