Vanos Solenoid Gaskets

I'm new to this forum but have owned my '03 e53 4.4 since new in November of 2002- I've got 80k on the clock. I've enjoyed it but have replaced some things- ride height compressor 3 times, front air spring struts, valley pan gasket, oil breather tube assembly, CV joint covers, fuel pump, water pump, valve cover gaskets, brake rotors and pads, transmission fluid, rear hatch struts, instrument cluster and various maintenance items. I plan on keeping it a while longer. While replacing the tires this week, the technician noted 2 things- the tension strut bushings were worn, not badly, and I know that is a common issue with this mileage, but he also noted oil leaking from the vanos solenoid gaskets on both banks. Is this a common issue at this mileage? Is it a DIY job? He quoted me about $350 to do it.
Thanks for your help, great site, I should have discovered it sooner...
