What is referred to as the oil level sensor (mounted in the bottom of the oil sump) measures oil level, oil additive quality, and oil temperature. There may or may not be an independent oil temperature sensor, I don't know.
The signal is processed by the vehicle before being displayed, so you could have a problem in the sensor, or in the processing of the signal.
