There is another ground cable under the car - I believe it is close to the starter on the passenger side.

A defective/bad Crank position sensor will not prevent the engine from turning over, it will just prevent the engine from starting.
The starter is grounded directly to the block.
Sounds like the EWS system is not allowing the starter to turn over. Since you tried both keys and the results were the same I would suspect a bad receiver in the column that is not receiving a signal from the key transponder.
