I had similar behvior with my 2001 4.4i. Turned out to be split / mushy oil separator hoses. Wouldn't hurt to inspect them as they're easy to check. Remove the BMW cover and look behind the engine on the passenger side. If you want to know more search on my name and "oil separator hoses".
