Can anybody tell me what gas flow direction is in the CCV? Is it going up or down?

I saw both oil cap and CCV hose are filled with yellowish stuff, but not sure if it's formed at the top or being brought up from the bottom.

Another interesting finding is, the gasket in the oil cap (on top of the engine), is so hardened over the years (12 years). Maybe that's where the humidity comes in.
