You can experience troubles programming the home link a couple ways. First and most obvious....you're not doing something right. Read the steps thoroughly and see what's goin on. The second (not so obvious) issue may be a hardware incompatibility. Is it a relatively new garage door opener? As of a couple years ago, homelink changed the communication protocols used in the "universal garage door opener" as a result of manufacturers switching to a more secure means of communication on their openers. Vehicles manufactured after '08 (I think?) are not affected by this change, but previous models are.

As was the case for my X, when I switched to the lift master 8500 w/ myQ, you may have to call home link and get their "repeater". It takes the signal from the X's home link and translates it into something the opener can understand.
