If you have a full size spare, you should have straps and a handle that you insert into the lower tail gate, then you lower the tail gate and lock it into place with the plastic support rod thingy. When you lower the door with the handle in place, the straps raise the spare up and allows you to slide it off the straps & over the tail gate.
The procedure is in the owners manual....and there's also and excellent video on youtube that shows how to use the apparatus. The spare tire apparatus is used starting about 2 minutes into the video below. Caution, remember to use the rod to support the tailgate and prevent it from spring back...the rod keeps the tail gate in the lowered position as you extricate the spare:

ahhhh merry christmas, noooooo i didnt know about the plastic rod that ties to attaches to the lid! jeeez i will check your link, worst of all i think i have damaged a tendon ligament in my shoulder pulling up the spare.....thanks for the vid will check it out
