I can't speak to 'average,' but my seller/dealer, a bmw specialty shop, replaced the alternator in mine as part of the pre-sale prep. at 81k miles - along with a new fan clutch, both about to go in their judgment. From the service sheet, they installed a bmw alternator [$559 entry on the service sheet].
