Wood trims are a classic and they still look good in some cases like in my wife's E70...
The colour match is just perfect (to our taste) and I wouldn't tamper with it at all.
On the other hand , in some other model like my E53 4.8 , the wood trim just made it look even more outdated. BMW's design philosophy has changed and most of their sport models are now with "modern" and trendier look. At the Montreal auto show last week , the M3 was presented with the CF trims. Even BMW designers black out everything they can (again in the sportier models).
People buy brand new high end cars and black out the chrome cause black wasn't available.
Like you said , art is in the eye of the beholder but it's much more than art...it's trendy. The more chrome your car has the older(dated) it looks even if it's a brand new 2014 high end car. I like a TOUCH of chrome but thats about it.
