The only way that thing is coming out is because the stub isnt being pushed into locking port completely. Do you notice that it takes a lot of force to twist the handle into the correct position? That or, all the playing around with it had worn the tabs down, allowing just enough of a gap to let it slip past the locking tabs on the handle carrier.
You should be able to get it back on without removing the door car thought if I recall correctly. But if you need to have some moving room, then the right way would be to remove the door card. Only takes an extra 8 minutes, 10 if you are drunk.
