I really like the way WI does their vehicle titling and registration and plates and taxes.
Sales tax is based on what you paid for the vehicle, regardless of value. transfer of ownership is 70 bucks, Plates belong to the individual, not the vehicle. Plates including annual registration is just 75 dollars for any car/SUV/light truck. And WI does not have any emissions testing or smog. It's a smoke 'em if you got 'em kind of place. As of last year though they switched to a title holding state. I hate title holding! You want to buy a vehicle off a guy who has a lien and you have to trust that he will send it to you. You want to sell your vehicle with a small lien and you can't hand them a title at the end of the sale! I bought this off a guy in Iowa which is electronic titling meaning at the time I bought it, there wasn't even a physical title to exchange! very lame.
