I hear you. My last set of wheels for the R5 cost $3k. Tires were extra.

I have always used roof racks, but I am tall and have never had an issue reaching. We had a race style road tandem on a Thule roof rack on both the X5 and X3; it was heavier, about 30 lbs, probably close to many mountain bikes. I could put it up there solo still. The rack fit the X3 better, since the roof is longer, but that just mattered with the tandem. I just like having the bikes more secure so that we don't have to worry as much about where we park. When we travel with bikes on the roof I bring them inside at night. The rack is locked to the BMW rails with four common key locks, and the bikes are locked to the rack. If I don't bring the bikes inside at night I still take the front wheels down from their holders since they are just secured with a bicycle cable lock.
