My harmonic balancer also failed today, at just under 200,000km.
Indications: Burning rubber smell, alternator/battery light ON and power steering very heavy.
To limp home, I reduced the load on the failing harmonic balancer by deselecting the air-con, turning off any lights and any other non essential electrical loads.
Had to be careful of the engine temperature though, as the waterpump is also driven from the same source.
