That's not good... A year or more ago, my mechanics thought the harmonic Balancer had a crack in it (apparently common), but after they spent a day pulling everything off, they found it was dirt. They didn't charge me (since I didn't know they were doing that until I picked the car up) but I tell you, my X5 has never been the same (no, its not the thoughts in the head, it just isn't the same).
Good that you nursed yours back home... Hopefully, you can fix it quickly and get back on the road.
