I had no specific indication it was bad. In fact it made no noise, or rattle as is common when they fail. I pulled it to inspect and found my DISA valve "flapper" was loose on the arm and not being controlled. The pin fell out, and I was unable to verify it had vacuum pressure without attempting to fix it with the update kit. The proper update kit is 80-90 dollars. I was pointed towards a brand new Dorman brand DISA for the 3.0 on Amazon for about 120.00, a steal over the 300.00 OEM valve.
I opted to go this route. I had a dirt IACV, and a lower intake elbow with major pieces missing. I also still do have what I consider a suspect MAF. That said, the truck was absolutely slow, probably running with somewhere around 120-130hp. When entering the highway, my lack of "giddy-up" was the only real indication there was something a miss. I know what a good running BMW should feel like, and this wasn't it. I'm glad I did replace it. Looked to me like the one I removed was the original. Truck had about 115k miles, 2001 Model Year.
