Since he is just adding fluid to the system and not doing a drain and refill, he should check the fluid level with the engine running. Opening the fill hole with the engine off will ensure that ATF will pour out of the fill hole and by the time he reacts to the amount of ATF coming out of the hole he would have lost a great deal of ATF.
