Both TIS and Bentley cover removal/replacement of the expansion valve but seem to say nothing about the evaporator - I get the idea much of the dash must be removed, but would like to know more...

I seem to have a slow leak and finally noticed some sign of dye along the edge of the evaporator where the inlet and outlet pipes join the body.
