I think there is a sort of ribbon cable in there that is all wound up to allow the buttons to work and wheel turn. Maybe if you let the wheel turn past the point that would normally be the stop/lock to lock it damaged the cable.

Don't know for sure on E53's.... Just thinking out loud.
