I never made any progress so took it into the BMW dealer. They immediately said it needed a recharge, that this is how low charge presents in the X5. They charged it and it's colder than it ever was -- makes me wonder if it was low from the very beginning.

They said to come back in a couple months to check for leaks.

They could not explain why it works that way -- hot on one side when low on charge.
