When you launch, or where you stage makes no difference to elapsed time (ET) over a given distance. When your front tire breaks the beam the timing begins. Reaction time (RT) is the amount of time after the light is green that it takes for the front of the front tire to cross the starting line.

In a race, short staging, stopping as soon as the first staging light comes or hitting the gas when the 3rd yellow is lit can be helpful to some, especially if ones reaction time is inconsistent, but it all depends on RT. It will vary for everyone. Even the best RT will not change the ET though if two vehicles have identical ETs, the best reaction time will win the race. Or, if the ETs are close enough the slower ET can still win if RT is enough faster.

If the only goal is the best ET your vehicle is capable of generating, I recommend starting anytime after the green when you feel ready as trying for a great RT requires considerable focus that could be dedicated to making sure you launch exactly as you planned.
