Best to have summer and winter setups if you can afford it
All season tires are somewhere in the grey zone...ok in rain and ok in the snow
Last winter on my e39 I had some hankook ipike's and it handled very nicely for rear wheel drive....I couldn't say the same for my all season michelin's that the hankook's replaced ...they were just rock hard in freezing conditions and very unsafe..(not that we get a lot of ice in Seattle but something worth considering in colder climates)

performance summer tires do wear a lot faster than all seasons though..
