e53 x5 camshaft sensor help request

hello, I'm looking for some assistance in figuring out correct part number for an E53 N62 Camshaft Sensor. I purchased part# 12147518628 and when trying to install in my car it would not fit as original part number has a 2 cylinder shape. see attached picture.
the one on the right is the 8628 part number and the one on the left is the one out of my X5.
I could not get the new part past half way and I'm assuming is due to incorrect shape.
please let me know if able to provide help or any feedback.
Thanks

Where did you buy the sensor?

I only know my 01' 3.0i, has a redesign over the sensor head, just like the one on the right in your picture. But they're plug & play. I bought it from Bavauto, so not sure if the one you have is an aftermarket.

Good luck!!

I bought it locally thru parts shop with plenty of research pictures.
even BavAuto points to the item on the right as per the correct item, but as noted, the item in the left is what came out of my car. the item on the right would not go pass halfway point in the camshaft sensor location.

I would just take both sensors to where you purchased the sensor and let them see for themselves that the part they sold you is not right. Brought a wheel sensor for T Motorsport and gave them my vin number and the part number, but the wheel sensor they sent me was wrong. Called them up about the discrepancy in the part and they said that based on the vin the part they sent was the right part. I did a google search on the number that was on the part and it turns out that the part was for an E70.

I had no problem returning the part. My request is to see if anyone has experience or part numbers for the double cylinder shape. I actually went to the dealer to get some help and they told me the one cylinder shape should fit as that super reds the previous version.
I guess I will try again and see if it fits...maybe I was too gentle as mine is near the back fire wall and very little visibility..

What year is yours? My 4.4 2005 N62 also had strange CPS installed- on the passenger side both were like the one in the right picture; driver side has one like the right one and the other was unique with a pigtail (part # 12147539172). The part numbers are stamped on the side. I would measure the circumference or diameter of both and if they're not the same, insist on the correct one mentioning the part number stamped on the original one. The parts adviser was not aware of the difference on my car and sold me the wrong one.

Do not attempt to pound the new part in lest you damage the opening of the valve cover such that the correct part would fit loosely and cause issues. You'll also require that O ring.

so It turns out the piece in the right does fit and is the correct item - I'm a rookie and I guess I was being too gentle when trying to install.
I got some help from the dealership and they confirm for me the part on the left is previous version and no longer in production. my is an 04 and I guess I still have all original parts.
problem is solved and my long starting symptoms are now quite as long as before. I will most likely go ahead and try to replace all other 3 now that I'm comfortable with the process of taking it out.... I did not even have to remove the engine covers the second time around!

I have two extra (one with pig a tail) if you're interested. I replaced them out of mistaken diagnosis and they're in perfect working condition. Ping me and I'll give you a good deal.
