Door Handle

Hey Guys - I have a 2005 4.4i. When I tried to install a new carrier, I unfortunately "stripped" the part of the handle whereby you "twist" and push in the one end and screw in the other end. That other part, the one you twist, has that black part with the 2 end pieces and those 2 end pieces which holds that part of the handle connected to the door is now gone.

Do any of you have a suggestion of how to update or repair that black part so that when I pull on the handle that side of the handle doesn't completely pull out the way it does now? I really don't want to buy a new, exterior handle.

Thanks to all who answer.

Put a screw in that part. Look at the thread, outside door carrier handle ......... There is a guy that did that, and it works perfect.

Ninja edit. Look here.

i did the exact same thing. luckily, i was able to source a painted handle that i will replace the next time i do this repair. the cheap ebay carrier has become an issue, sticking in the open position every time i open the door.. i will bite the bullet and get OEM next time.

I read the thread you referenced and got to the part where the guy had the same issue as me but really couldn't "figure out" what he did - although I do understand he seems to have just inserted a screw onto the black nipple now that the wings were worn down, as is the case with me. However, is he screwing from the inside of the door - removing the door panel?

Sorry but I'm not very technical!

Thanks to all who answer.

Yea, I am pretty sure he is doing it from inside the door.

You should have removed the door panel anyway to get to the carrier.

And it takes all of 3 minutes to get the door card off.

A new door handle can be brought for around 40 bucks on line. If you can't afford to fix it properly it time to sell it and buy something that you can afford.

Thank you for your advice and forgive me for wanting to put a 2 cent screw in a door handle because I can't afford to fix it up to your standards, internet tough guy. However, just so you know, I am the original owner of my X5 which sold for $60k in 2005. Do you want to guess how many times I've had the door handle carrier changed on a truck that only has 78K miles? 6 times! 2 times under warranty and 4 times I bit the bullet. Since I'm not mechanically inclined like most guys on here, it costs about $500 a pop at the dealer. And the one time I tried to do it myself, I messed up the door handle. Not to mention all the other nonsense thats gone wrong with this truck, like the valve stem gaskets on the N62 engine which cost me $2,500 to repair, in addition to the normal wear and tear items that require regualr maintenance. And I'm just waiting for that coolant pipe to ess the bed!

I owned every car imaginable - Mercedes S class, E class, Porsche 928 & 911, Mustangs, BMW, Mercury, Ford, Lexus LX470, Land Cruiser - and I've never had to replace any mechanism of the door handle functionality even 1 time no less 6 times like on an X5!

My passenger side broke this morning.

Wound up costing me $336

$136 for the part at the dealer (in stock, that's how common this is)

And $200 on Craigslist so I won't freeze to death this weekend

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
Good call ^^ And yes the door carrier is probably most commonly broken piece on X5 and all the aftermarket ones are garbage.

You are welcome and you are forgiven. You may consider me an internet tough guy, but there are a lot of people here that I have help in my short time on this forum compare with your 10+ years on this forum and less than 100 posts.
