Blown engine in my 2005 4.8is! YIKES!

WTF! 122,000 miles on the new to me X5 and personally had only put 1500 miles on it! Just got this baby two months ago, had sorted out the mystery suspension issues (sensor turned around as well as weak compressor and bad front airbags), changed fluids including oil which was done before PO schedule, and POOF! it busts as my son left the parking lot after warming up for a couple minutes. Tragedy is I had just got all PO records from the previous Indy showing valve stem seals all done at 110K miles and all routine maintenance done consistently last 25k miles. Really liked the edgy feel of this critter and thought I had "scored" paying $9200 from the dealer where it was traded in. TiAg with the black/M tex Silver/blk alcantara and the dark poplar wood with SPORT seats and I'd rate at 8.5/10 interior and 8/10 exterior and NEW tires. Really good shape from her looks!

So now we are talking of an "econ" rebuild by my Indy when they are slow between jobs by the sharp but cheaper "rascally" young BMW tech or, maybe just a used motor. I had planned on keeping this "HMW" (high maint. wh@$e) for a number of years as my second car (sort of a little fling on the side) but now am getting a little "squirrelly". Oh well I already know what I have to do...FIX THE HOT LITTLE B!#$H! (with emphasis on the $).

Any suggestions on which way to go and where to get an engine? SWengines in Tulsa has one with 55k miles for $6K or reasonable offer never heard of 'em but supposedly the largest database in US, my Indy guys say a Calif. place $4500 w/110K miles. I am thinking "slow rebuild" with "Little Rascal". Personally I am way too busy in my own business to turn a wrench again.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome! URGH!!!!!!

Curious as to what exactly happend that the motor went caput?

You can find cheaper 4.8 motors (quick search on ebay "n62 4.8 engine"), they came in 550,650, and 750 BMW models, as well as the early stages of E70 X5. Now if it will be a direct bolt in im not 100% maybe someone else on here can better comment on that.

What i do know is the sedan motors do come with secondary air system (x5s did not, and good) which is also an issue common as with the valve stems, im sure before dropping it in, it can be removed and the port plated off.

Get it scanned first.....before going any further.

Are there any unusual behaviour....such as noise or smoke?

No compression right bank and metal in oil. At my Indy shop and they are surprised but say after research there is a history of problems like this with this motor. And plenty of rough noise! A whole series of scanning errors.

If there is metal in the motor oil you have to be careful on the rebuild. Check to make sure that the cylinder walls are not scored. You can find a used motor for less than the $6k but your back to not sure what you got. Spend the money and rip down the old engine to see what actually gave out. Strange that it blew up. Maybe something was incorrectly done when the heads came off for the valve seals.

I was in the same boat as you soon after I bought mine. Chain guides had been done, but obviously didn't know what they're were doing, as they didn't clean out the oil pan, resulting in plastic hits plugging the oil pickup. Had planned on rebuilding, but as when we opened it up, the bearings had spun, and the crankshaft was damaged... Bought an engine with just under a 100k for 4k. This way knew exactly where I was maintenance wise. Been enjoying it for the last couple years now... Interested as to why yours blew up....
