X5 Bad Thermostat Long Warm Up Times P0128

We have a bad thermostat in our E53 X5 3.0i and tested the warm up times between that car and our E39 530i with the same M54 engine. Interesting results, posted the video below. Happy New Year to all!

I had the same problem with my x5 last winter. It's actually good that it shows the temp not reaching normal. Mine sadly showed normal because of the moronic non/gauge that operates like an idiot light (snaps to top position when 30° F below operational temp. I drove several thousand miles running not closed loop getting terrible mileage until it was single digits outside and the cabin didn't get any heat.

Tip: for changing the t-stat use 1-1/4 inch wrench and hit with a hammer to remove the fan. Search YouTube you'll see examples. Way easier than the official tool.

Check your average mileage now and after the new t-stat. Mine went from 18 to 21 highway.
