Quick cluster question

Hello everyone. 04 x5 3.0i. I searched with the search function but I’m still a little confused. The part of my instrument clister where the mileage and outside temperature is not lit up. If I hold a flashlight to it I can see the data. So does this mean I have to do the ribbon repair or are the bulbs burned out? TIA

I don't know anything about the ribbon repair, but I believe that if all your bulbs are burned out, you'll observe what you are seeing there.

In my 2001, I had 2 out of the 5 burned out. Very easy to get access and to replace them. I bought 6 new ones and replaced all 5 at 178k miles. Look it up on here, but I'm guessing from memory that there are 3x Phillips #2 screws screwed in upwards under the top of the instrument panel cover. Undo those and the whole instrument panel just pulls out, providing easy and obvious access to the bulbs.

The cluster bulbs are small 1.5w bayonet deals... BMW #62111391260



I would NOT used LEDs in this case. LEDs have too narrow a "beam" angle and create "hot spots" on your text display. The standard incandescent lamps work much better, are cheap and last for 15 years or more. There's no advantage to LEDs and an obvious disadvantage.

I agree. I’m very née to this forum and I love it. It’s very informative and the members are great. It reminds me of Hayabusa.org.
