loud rattle from my 3.0d engine

Hi
A couple of days ago a rattle/Knock developed from the front of the engine.
Sounds like a lifter or chain.
The rattle gets louder when the steering is turned.
Some one said crank pulley but no movement when putting a lever behind it.
It started of as just a slight rattle but today it is real bad.
On first start no noise for about 3 seconds.
Engine runs spot on appart from this.

Hope someone can help please.

Thank you.

Checked the power steering fluid level? The tensioners and idlers in the belt path? The water pump? If the noise gets louder when turning the steering wheel, it seems possible the increased load on the belt if affecting the noise, so check out the various components that the belts runs.

Wasn't there a harmonic balancer problem on that engine model?

Seems to be a weak point for sure but it also seems to be more of an issue in hot climates - not so much in cooler locations (like NZ and the UK).

Dave indicated he had looked at that (mentioned the crank pulley) too. Not sure it would rattle like chain when it fails either - from what I’ve seen the outer pulley wheel section separates from the hub due to a rubber breakdown....
