frozen door locks

once again my front door locks are frozen again - this time the passenger side will not open from the outsie even after an hour of the car running...i had to pass by open road to get a $10 brake clip and i ask the sa if this is covered under CPO - of course he said no....then i call morristown bmw and ask them - they say: definately - bring it in today if you need to we can get you a loaner or bring it in tomm morning if it more convenient...needless to say i am heading there tomm to get this taken care of

typical of open road - i really hate that place with a rage that no one on here can understand...

Ditto - last night my driver's door was frozen solid - all the others doors opened - scheduled on Thurs to get oil change, new front bonnet emblem, and new Dinan letters (3rd set) - guess I'll add this to the list, besides that door lock has also been increasingly reluctant to unlock.

I've been in Open Road and agree with you - more people ought to shop around for better dealers, especially if you have so many to choose from - then maybe the worst of them will get the hint and improve their act or fold up their tent.

Fed up with the frozen lock problem - My X5 goes in today to get it replaced, oil change, new front bonnet emblem and new Dinan letters. Thanks to this website I knew there is an improved replacement part. Now I only hope it does correct the problem.

Re Dinan letters, it must be a bad batch because they did send the 1st corroded set back and it almost looks identical to the 2nd set on my X5 - Here's hoping the 3rd time is the charm.

New door lock installed - I know it's early yet, but this also has cured the reluctance the lock had to unlocking - nice cold temperatures to test the frozen problem (12deg F 25+mph winds) - will keep you informed

Talk about love being blind - never noticed the paint on the front hood emblem having peeled almost completely off - new roundel really sharpens it up.

Was your problem linked to cold weather? My doors have always held a lot of water (windows come up wet a day after a wash). With all the rain that we got last week, followed by the cold, I wound up with frozen doors again. They'll open, but won't latch closed.

I'm also finding that some of the posts but come firing up when it's cold. All this makes getting into a wet then cold X5 too much effort.

Ok the quick fix to get the door to close. The X5 lock will freeze after it rains and then the temps drop below freezing.

Once you get the car door open, inside the door jam on the door, you will notice a black oval rubber cap, remove that cap with a screwdriver, carefully. Once open, get a hair dryer and blow the hot/warm air into that hole, it will melt the frozen water along the cable and allow the door to latch. It works, but the problem will occur again given the conditions above. I keep a cheap hair dryer in the car for this reason during the winter.

Thanks for the reply. I got the door handles replaced last week. Apparently, there was a re-design to the handles around 2002/2003. I haven't picked my X5 up since the replacement, so I can't comment on whether or not the problem has been eliminated.
