Question regarding the engine oil?

I have 70k on my 3.0, and so far oil was changed on time at the dealership, but yesterday I got a message to check my oil level. When i checked it, I had to add 1 quart. My question is if this is OK, or I sholud be concerned?

Thanks

Yes this is normal for the 3.0!....when the "check engine oil level" comes on that means you are down 1 quart...which is accurate.

I just got the "check engine oil" message and checked the oil level as the manual described. However, the level on the oil stick is about 3/4 to the max. Does that mean I still need to add 1 quart according to your statement? My X5 is 2006 @ 13.5K miles.
Thanks.

Acccording to owners manual it's within normal operating tolerances to burn a quart every 5000 miles! However if mine starting consuming oil at that rate i would be considering it time for a trade in.

My 2002 3.0i just hit 80K miles. I've added 2 quarts of oil in the past 8K miles - it's no biggie, and completely normal. My 07 550i asks for a quart every 6K miles or so - the BMW's like to use oil and is no need for concern. Just top it off and you’re good to go!

If the check engine oil light you refer to is the check engine oil level light (looks like a pump oil can), then there are two possibilities for the discrepancy:

1) The oil level sensor could be bad. If it isn't #2, below, then it is this by default. See your dealer.

2) The reading you are getting on the dipstick may not be accurate. Ensure that the engine is warm, and shut off, and that the vehicle has sat for a few minutes not running. The vehicle must be level. Take a few readings, wiping the dipstick clean each time. If you continue to get readings between add and full, then see your dealer, as above. I suspect that the oil will drain down and that you will need to add a quart, but that is just a hunch.

Good luck.
