Should Muslim holidays be observed in public schools (USA)?
My first reaction is no, simply because most Jewish holidays are not observed in public schools, nor are Christian holidays for that matter. With the exception of Christmas, I can't think of another Federal holiday focused around (or suppose to be) religion. The article mentions Easter, but that falls on a Sunday so technically you already are out for that day. Students have a choice, if they are highly religious, to simply not go to school that day and provide a parental response as to why the child wasn't there. If we opened the door to other religious holidays being mandated, where would it end? Christmas is breed into the US society and established in schools as a holiday, going so far back I can't find the exact date. -------

All or nothing.
If we're going to observe theirs, then I expect mine to be observed with the same reverence (or lack thereof). My suspicion is that political correctness will dictate that the Muslim holidays will be observed to great depth and fanfare, while Judeo-Christian Holidays are completely ignored.

Only if they observe other holidays such as Cinco de Mayo, Chinese New Years, Doctor's day, Administrative Assistant Day, etc.
You see, there are many cultures in this country and you are free to celebrate these holidays, but does it have to be a Federal Holiday?

I think this is a decision for each school district to decide on their own. For example, someone mentioned above that Jewish holidays are not observed. Well, here in Rockland County NY (where there is a very high Jewish population), the schools do have off for most Jewish Holidays.
If there is a school district where there is a very significant percentage of Muslim students, then I don't see why they should not have off. The law of each state dictates how many school days per year schools must be open. Other than Federal Holidays, I think it should be up to the board of each school district to decide the schedule that best fits their students.
