Flaking alloy wheel
got it replaced under warranty, but just posting to see firstly if this is common and secondly inform others with similar issues that it should be replaced under warranty. |

Got a phone call from the SA today.
They made a mistake and it had not been authorised by BMW UK yet. I sent them the pictures above and several others, but they say the guy from BMW UK has to come out in person to authorise it. They want me to take the X back to put the old wheel back on and then I need to wait for a rep from BMW UK to come out and have a look to see if they will authorise it. What the f$%#? Anyone out there with any ammo (similar issue?). |

Those specks are brake dust deposits. If left long enough on a wheel, the deposits will corrode through the paint causing pitting. It happens on all makes and model vehicles and it is an inevitable byproduct of the brake function. I have never heard of wheels being replaced because of corrosion caused by brake dust, but if congrats to you if you can make it happen.

not on a £60000 vehicle with only 14000 miles on it that gets cleaned every week by my own hand.
none of the other wheels look even slightly like it. it's not visible in the picture but to the naked eye there are visible spirals in the finish and if you run your finger over it you can feel grooves (coarse) as opposed to smooth finish on all the other wheels. |
