I done this on my e39 and the only method in, without doing damage, was to get up under the car, find the hood cable and pop it from underneath, then put power to the battery terminals.

I got in!!! i put a battery charger cable on the postive side of the starter under the X5 and negative to frame ground.. battery!! power!! doors unlocked!! WOW what a pain.. I guess in the last 8 years I should have tried the key in the door.. Humm it's sad how we much we count on electrical items.. If I lost my cellphone I only remember 3 or 4 numbers.. before address books i knew 25 plus numbers off the top of my head.. no more.. what a learning experience.. Mark

Glad to hear that worked. Where is the start underneath? Front, back, under a skid plate? I did a quick search and can't other treads. Any more details or a pic would rock.
