Picked up a used X5 and it whistles!

First, I want to say hello to anyone out there. This is my first post but definitely not the first time I've visited the board. A quick bit about me - I'm a former aircraft mechanic who now pilots a desk. One of my intentions in getting a used X5 was to get a little wrench time in, even if it was off the clock. We'll, got what I wished for.

Anyway,

Yes, I had the dreaded whistle on my 03 X5 3.0 (58,000 mi). Symptoms where:
High pitch whistle at the "cruise" gas pedal setting. Anything more and the whistle clearly cut off (not drowned out by other noises). Predominantly in gear as that allows more precise pedal control, any gear. Slight squeak as I pushed through "that" pedal range in neutral. NO sound when coasting in neutral.

Pulled out the old inspection mirrors and took a look around. Below is a photo of what I found;

Crack was right behind the bend (btw, thank god for inspection mirrors. If you don't have one then get one asap.)

Intake hose was $20 at the dealer, no part number needed (they know it on sight). Easy fix, round 40 minutes.

Now, annoying whistle is gone. Still notice a very light whistle, but far more tolerable then the one I fixed.

There, hope someone finds this useful.
Now - on to the blower fan that won't shut off.

Same issue

Hey thanks for posting the information. I have a 2001 X5 with only 52K miles and its been a headache so far. I have already had some issues. The latest "self level-error" which cost me about $300 just to have the dealer run test and finally find a blown fuse. Mind you no fault codes ever came, and I am not quite sure if the car is still fixed, since it seems like it has dropped a bit.

As far as Whistling noise, I hear it on my X5 as well, it seems like its coming from underneath, however, can't be too sure. I have read other threads on vairous BMW forum, it appears to be a common problem.

Hi 335&X5, thanks for sharing the info. My 2005 4.4 has the same symptom but mine is still under warranty (30,000 mi). Do you happen to know the formal name of that part? That might help me point them to the right direction. Thanks!
