Central locking acting funny

Hello.

Recently I had a problem with the rear left lock:

when I drive off, the doors normally lock. Now, only 3 of them lock and one is not locking.

When I use the console button to lock the doors, 3 doors lock and 1 does not.

When I use key to lock the doors, all 4 lock.

When I use key to unlock the doors, only 3 unlock.

If the rear door is locked, and I try to unlock using a button, it does not unlock.

So, this pattern indicates that the door will lock with the double locking but will not respond to any other lock/unlock commands.

Is this something with the lock hardware, cabling/pins/bolts?
Or is it something electrical, like blown fuse or a relay?
Or the "lock brain" has gone south?

Any ideas?

Thank you,

hmmm, I was looking funny at my 3.5 year old - he sits next to that door and his sister sits next to the right door... I guess I was wrong about him...

So, what do you think - is there a central locking RESET procedure?

Boston,

Have you resolved the issue? I am out of country on a long trip and will return in a few weeks, just to go onto another trip yet and then another one again... So, I have not dealt with the problem...

I was wondering if you have resolved the lock issue...

check my post #12 on this thread. http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...on-help-2.html
I think this is a known problem on earlier X5, 2000-2003.
I haven't got a chance to do mine yet and winter is coming so I better do it soon.
I just hope BMW would recall this door locks bowden cable thing.

Thank you,
Does the door lock slowly on the side giving you problems, like it's forcing its way to unlock or lock? If so, this is usually the symptom of a bad door lock actuator... I've already had 2 replaced on my car under warranty... It is a known problem particularly earlier X5's 2000-2003...

I am out of Costa Rica on a bus. trip and will check to see if the lock is lazy once I am back. I have another month-long trip scheduled within a week once I am back from this trip and then another trip yet after that...

So, by the time I really can get into the issue, it probably will be hot and dry in January. BTW, the entire issue happened in a tropical country during wet season - granted, the car was driven in Chicago, in Pensylvania and in DC area for few years before ending up in Central America, so the winter cause is definetely a possibility, as well as the humidity reasoning...

I will keep you posted on developments...

Do we know if this issue has been addressed by the BMW? I wonder how it can be taken care of if the car is still under US registry but is driven overseas with dip plates?

Anyone on this board had US recall addressed while overseas?

Well, as I expected, I am back for a short period of time and it is already January and the problem is not resolved as it was not addressed yet. I have looked at some other posts on the board and the door lock problem seems to be a problem that may warrant BMW NA looking into it. I lean more and more towards bad actuator and consider replacing it.

Do we have BMW NA reps on this board that read the posts and possibly reply with some suggestions? I know that the BMW NA is addressing the bad pixels on the clusters even for the cars out of standard factory warranty - do we have anything similar to that going on with the door locks?

What is described in the original post is EXACTLY what I am experiencing.

Doe anyone have instructions to replace the door lock actuator, as I am guessing that that is the culprit. (Unless, anyone has first hand knowledge otherwise)

I have had this issues in the past with the passenger door, and believe that is what was replaced to resolve the issue.

Thanks

This happened to me on the driver side after I replaced the grommet, I think I will just put graphite to lube? Is that bad idea?
