year of your X and are there orange right now on half orange half clear?

If you have 00 - 02 then you can bake open your headlights, and open them up. After that, you will have to dremel the orange off the lens...

I'm so dying to try and take out the yellow waffles out of my '04 but I've had enough trouble trying to get the bumper off just to get the headlamp out...

does the '04 headlamp need to be baked as well? just in case I have the courage to try again and take the bumper out...

You can only bake headlights on pre-facelifted X5's mfr'd prior to 08/2002 (or maybe 10/2002) Example of date code on headlight assembly reading 08/2001:
