Electrical Shutdown

I'm driving to work on Friday and the battery light in my 2000 4.4 comes on. After work it cranks up just fine, everything working. The shop is 10 minutes away, so I figure no problem. 5 minutes later, everything is shutting down. I crawl into the shop with nothing, not even the flashers working. The battery is 2.5 years old. Just passed 100,000 miles, had it since 42,000.

Is it likely the alternator?
Is it common for the electical to drain that fast?

If you can jump the car and get it going, hook multimeter to the battery post and see if the vehicle is charging. If not, the alternator may be faulty.

Are you pulling any check engine codes?

Thanks Bimmer Ese. I left it at the shop that night. They're charging it now to check just what you said. Don't know yet if any check engine codes.
