Tranny Service at 100,000?

2000 4.4 - Just picked up the X5 from my indy shop for an alternator replacement ($700 and change, not bad, including belts and BMW alternator). I like to ask the wrench-turners their opinion on things. I am already on the schedule for a waterpump replace (per everybody's opinion on his site), and asked these guys "what's next if I want to keep the car for a while". He recommended a tranny fluid replacement. Yes, I know, it's supposed to be "lifetime", but whose "lifetime"? So, is it "ain't broke, don't fix"? Or, do it now before it's too late?

At 100k, you should skip the AT fluid flush and start saving for a new gearbox.

When you flush the tranny there is a possiblity of kicking up some metal bits and other solid junk, which in return could settle somewhere and cause damage.

This info was from my dealer, not really sure what the right thing to do is though. I know there is alot of talk about this subject, use the search.

I asked the same question a while back and got some good feedback. At that mileage I would skip it if it has never been changed before. I decided to leave it alone after pondering the feedback I got. Check out this thread.

ATF to change or not to change... ( 1 2 3)
