X5 - Fitting new Mk4 Module

Hi - I have recently bought a Mk4 sat nav module for installing in my X5 (e53). I already have the 16-9 monitor, TV , CD, bluetooth etc. What I want to know is if the cables are already installed and hidden away somewhere in the boot, or do I need to buy some extra cable harnesses to connect the unit. Thanks

(what he said)

I just got my Mk IV - which I'm swapping out the old MkIII, so it should be plug'n'play - I had asked Bimmernav the same question when I ordered online, but rec'd no reply - ordered the Navteq dvd 2008.1 - downloaded V32, but still don't know if I burn it as a CD or a DVD?

another unknown - my present software is 3-1/20 - IF the MkIV reads the V32 disc, will it update the OBC?

seemly simple questions, but Murphy's Law has been reigning supreme lately in my life

MK3 to MK4 is plug n play, but *before* you unplug the mk3.

Goto the car open the drivers door,
Then goto the nav computer wait for the red led on the drive to go out,
Then press eject on drive,
Eject the map disc,

Use some radio pullers (or small screwdrivers) to get the nav unit out.
Unplug the old and replace with the new.

If you don't follow the steps above the you risk damage to the mk3 and it may leave the mk3 in a "funny" state, bad news if you are going to sell it on.

As for the other questions, you can use either a cd or a DVD to update the software, but use a cd as it's expected in that media.

3-1/20!!!,
this is very old indeed, upating to 3-1/63 will improve the MK3 no end, make sure you use the correct mode formatted image though.

Question Virgin install of MK4 (not upgrading)

In my case, I don't have any previous nav version to upgrade - I'm trying to do a new install of a MK4. The MK4 I bought came without any cables - just the module itself, so I'm not sure if I also need additional cables. As mentioned earlier, I already have everything else installed in my car (bluetooth, TV, Radio, OBC, 16:9 monitor, 6-cd changer). Does anyone know if I need extra cables?? Thanks!

if your existing system is fully functional then all you need to do is

1. Fit GPS antenna + antenna cable
2. Fit Mk4 mounting bracket
3. Fit Mk4 wiring loom - this is about 30cm long and connects to existing cable in boot
4. Plug in Mk4
5. Code as required.

^ what jochen says, also if the mk4 is brand new (no system) as soon as it powers up it will ask for a OS disc (mine did and in german), so have a disc handy just in case.

WHERE do you get the upgrade to 3-1/63? - for the last 3 yrs (since purchasing it in 05/2005) I've asked a number of dealers if there was an upgrade from 3-1/20 and all I received were blank looks!

I take it that it's a CD.

Thanks, for the detailed swapout instructions

I thought the removal tools were 2 house-shaped pins - rec'd 2 flat-bladed metal plates with an "L" shaped end?

The Operating System CD is a standard issue disc which is issued to all dealers. It contains the operating software for the Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, Mk4, Navi01, Navi02 and Navi03 navigation computers, as found in 3-, 5-, 7-series and X3, X5, Z4.

You can download the CD image from many locations. For a Mk3 you need V22 or later - current issue is V32, but every issue between V22 and V32 contains the same version Mk3 software (3-1/63)

See this link here:

WARNING: when burning a CD for the Mk3, you must check that the CD is Mode2/Form1 format, otherwise the loading process will crash the Mk3.

Correct or download it and burn yourself (on a quality cd at the slowest rated write speed and verify before use), make sure you get the right one (mode2).

Radio pullers are the other name for the 2 house shaped pins.

You can also use heavy duty coat hanger wire or , as I do, 4 large finishing nails.
