Mine wasn't very loud but sometimes on rough roads I could hear a rattle and then I removed my cargo cover since I don't use it and the sound stopped. Try taking out the cargo cover and going for a spin

i agree the cargo cover sucks on the e53 foer whatever reason it makes noise whether extended or not...also make sure you have 2 rubber boots on either side of the latch mechanism on the glass hatch. there are 2 screws on on either side that are covered with a rubber boot..but beware if you need to buy they cost $32 each at the stealer..i am missing one so stuck one of those felt pads on top of the screw...i am not giving bmw 32 dollars for a 2 dollar part..rob
