How to know if rear rotors are warped?

In general, rotors seldom warp. What causes the vibration commonly attributed to "warped rotors" is a build of brake dust on the irregular surface of the rotors. Often vibrations felt through the steering wheel on braking are caused by worn bushings in the steering or front end suspension. Before you invest in any more brake parts have the front suspension checked.
Just my 2 cents.

And to add to the post above, if you did have a problem with your rear rotors (uneven pad deposition, warping, etc) it wouldn't feed back through the steering system.

When does the wheel shake? When you are braking or all the time?
Most likely your would feel the brake pedal pulse under your foot if you were to feel anything from a warped rotor. If it were my car, I would 1) check the tire pressures 2) check for uneven tire wear 3) rotate the tires 4) get the wheels aligned.

replace tires when they are due, not rotate them around until they are all due to be replaced. rear warped rotors would cause a skipping sensation. check tension strut bushings. they are due to be replaced every 25-30K miles. |

All suspension looks good to 2 mechanics i showed car to. I just did front rotors and brake pads job,but steering steel shakes a bit under hill braking. Any ideas? Tires are new, wheels aligned fine.

are your mechanics trained on what goes bad on x5 suspensions? did you use OEM brake pads, and rotors, did you torque the wheels to 140nm? did you check the brake calipers and see if they are sticking? how many miles are on your car? |

if your thrust arm bushings have not been replaced in the last 30K miles replace them. a thud/clunk can be heard and felt through the steering wheel when jabbing the brakes at low speeds. if you trust your 2 mechanics you brought your car to, then i would say you have defective aftermarket brake components.

I believe sobi6111 had the issue before he had the brakes done. Doing the front brakes reduced the issue 80% he mentioned.
I have another vehicle (not the X5) where the brake pulses and the wheel shimmies during braking. When I turn or replace the rotors and change the pads and correct the tire pressures, the issue goes away...but it comes back again after 15k or so until I do the brakes again. I've done the brakes 4 times so far. I thought it was the master cylinder, but everytime I do the brakes ... it goes away. Then again it is not an X5 so this may not apply to your issue. Have you bumped a curb or hit any pot holes recently? It was asked in the post before this, how many miles on the X?
