shifting question

hi everyone..i need some advice...if i drive the x for a couple of hours lets say running errands then i park it for a few hours then if i drive it again the tranny wont shift out of first until it warms up again...i have to drive slow for about a minute then it will shift..i can see it doing this in the winter when it is cold outside but not in the summer when it is hot outside..it is very annoying...is this something normal that you experience...need some advice ....thanks

Not normal.

Miles on vehicle?

Miles on transmission fluid?

Has it been changed recently?

Any transmission service work?

Yeah, when my mothers '98 528i had the same symptoms I did a spill and fill with trans fluid and filter and it doesn't act up as bad. Still not perfect, but it does have ~150k on the original tranny so I'm expecting a rebuild in the next couple years.

Ok, with that low of mileage it isn't going to be a fluid issue unless by some chance the trans fluid was badly overheated... Most likely would be solved with trans software updating, then driving it on the softer side for the first couple hours after the update.

Agree that it doesn't sound like a fluid issue. You say you have CPO until 2011, so it sounds like you need to book an appointment at your dealer, and perhaps arrange a test drive with the service manager or service advisor when you drop it off, so that you have the best chance of demonstrating the problem to them.

just an update..brought the x in to the dealer and they said that they reflashed all 4 tranny modules..it made the 2nd to 1st bucking problem much better but it is still slightly there but the other issue of not shifting out of first as mentioned above is still present..i am going to schedule another appoinment..i also have been talking with bmw na on the matter...i would like to perhaps get a new tranny..what are your thoughts..thanks rob
