Torque converter or clutch causing my stalling in reverse and drive before warmed up?

OK please help been at MAG in Columbus Ohio with my X 5 with 143,000 miles on it

Symptons are if I start it up and the engine is cold when I put it in reverse or drive the rpm's drop below 500 rpms and it wants to stall

After it warms up to normal operation temp its fine and will not duplicate the stalling

It drives fine and I can drive it during this process

It was told it may be a torque converter causing my issue but if it gets warm in 10 minutes of driving and will not do it again could it be something else?

I just dropped $2,000 and not fixed yet

Could a bad thermostat cause this to happen as well?

Again when I put it in reverse out of the garage it shakes and then stalls I then start it and it starts fine.

Thanks in advance

X5 stalling in reverse

Well...I thought my wife was crazy until I searched on here for this issue and found others experiencing it as well....

I just put a new Tstat in figuring that had something to do with it, but alas, she said it did it again today....

I have never had it do it when I've driven it....

Anyone figure out this issue?

There's no safety feature if you remove your foot from the brake before its engaged??...

Any codes, I had similar problems back end of 2011. Now all sorted thankfully.

I am having the stalling problem with my X5 4.4 when its below freezing cold starts, rough idle, wants to stall, i can hold the rps up around 1000 for a minute and the problem goes away. Anyone have an idea of what this could be?

Well it could be one of a couple of things.
It could be the map sensor that needs to be cleaned(not likely).
It could be the throttle sensor. (this is do to when it is cold the car will still act as if the choke is still on(this is the comp keeping the butterfly closed and richening up the fuel mix))
You may need to swap out the plugs (bosch +4) would be a good replacement.
This has nothing to do with your trans, it is the motor, and the fuel and spark it gets. Ether too much fuel or too little. If it would not start at all then I would thing either the cold start valve or the crank sensor.
