Custom Rear airbags for NON-Selflevelling E53
I have an E53 that has regular spring + shocker suspension : not self levelling air suspension. My question is, has anybody successfully fitted aftermarket airbags into the suspension of their E53? There's a product here in Australia called Polyair, who make bags that you put inside the regular suspension spring, and pump air into them using a car pump, if you need to lift up the back of your car a little. The regular springs still stay in place. Polyair don't make them for E53 X5's. I emailed some places in USA and got same "no" answer. Anyone able to help here? I can't justify the large $ that would be involved in a retrofit of self levelling, and from what I read, they're a bit of a reliability/maintenance headache.. I've attached a photo of a airbag inside a spring off some other car (Nissan?) { which looks like a big of a dodgy install actually! } Cheer + thanks, Scott. |

I did a full aftermarket 4-corner self-leveling air suspension setup well over a year ago and have yet to have any problems with reliability or complaints. That being said though, you can't expect the same maintenance cost for an elaborate air set up as you would for a simple coil spring set up.
You probably aren't going to find a company that makes an air spring helper kit for the x5..... Your other alternative (and simplest) would be to ditch the rear coil springs and retro in a set of bags from arnott using manual rocker switches for adjustment.
