ATF

hello everyone.

I always heard a winning noise when i turn the steering wheel all the way.
Today I checked under the hood and the ATF fluid is almost gone. it doesnt even show on the level. And now im worried of the damage it may cause.

What kind of fluid do you recommend?
And what is the best way to do it? for 2002 x5 3.0 m54 motor
so far i found this...
Cloudy ATF in PS resevoir - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums
E46 ZF Automatic Transmission ATF Fluid & Filter Change DIY - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

your input is appreciated... thanks

If you were checking under the hood it was not the transmission fluid. There is no dipstick.
Some power steering systems use atf and the cap is labeled for the fluid type. And regular/dex3 atf is fine.

ATF stands for automatic transmission fluid

interesting...
i have the mb4 motor... so in this case its in front of the motor besides the oil filter.

there is no power steering fluid in bmw because steering take the atf.
atf- automatic transmission fluid.
mtf- manual transmission fluid.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
next to the oil filter is the PS reservoir which says "ATF oil only" on the cap.

get a quart of synthetic Mobil 1 ATF and top it off if it has no fluid, but make sure to not overfill it, there is a level indicator on the dipstick. I overfilled mine at first and it leaked out all oover the reservoir when i drove.

What brand of ATF in the steering system is not as important as how old it is in there. Here is how I change out mine annually:

1. Siphon out the old fluid from the reservoir
2. Fill with new fluid
3. Turn the steering wheel from side to side a few time
4. Repeat 1-3 for 2 more times

Alex, I've never heard of a mb4 engine in a E53. It's M54B30.
